The promoters (left to right): Knuth Jasker and Dr. Hans Fischer radiate confidenceSince its founding in 1962, the German MTM Association e.V. has been actively supporting its members both in content and organization. An example of this is the development of building block systems such as Standard Data, UAS, MEK or MOS as well as courses such as the “European Industrial Engineer” on the content side and the founding of the Consultancy Organization, the Institute and later the MTM Group for Productivity Services on the organizational side. Through the IMD (International MTM Directorate), whose current president, Dr. Hans Fischer of the German MTM Association, has been serving since 2005, MTM in Germany is an engine and source of innovation for worldwide application. Due to the steady growth of competition which has arisen from the use of MTM in productivity management, through the activities of member companies and through the various partnerships between the Institute and colleges and universities, the MTM Organization has become a promoter of industrial engineering in Germany. We spoke with President Dr. Hans Fischer (MTM Association) and Knuth Jasker (MTM Organization) at the headquarters in Hamburg about the MTM organization today.
MTMaktuell: How does industrial engineering look today from the perspective of the MTM Organization?
Hans Fischer: We see MTM as a process language, a core element in the spectrum of methods and processes of modern industrial engineering. We are, however, aware that MTM alone cannot cover every possible job in IE. That’s why we’re working on combining MTM with other IE methods in a cooperative effort to achieve optimal results for productivity management.
Knuth Jasker: Industrial Engineering is not static. It has developed in companies from its original form as labor economy and time management to a comprehensive system of productivity management. It is a core element for maintaining competitiveness and opens the way for value adding. From Value Stream, modern industrial engineering affects value adding, information flow and material flow. This also contains the administrative operations and, ultimately, the entire value adding chain. The MTM Organization has the expertise and experience to actively support the industry here.
MTMaktuell: And how exactly is this reflected in its training and practice?
Hans Fischer: I’ll begin with training, which comes before practice and is a prerequisite for a company’s success. Last year we expanded the training program accordingly and are now offering a seminar on “MTM and Value Stream”. Here participants will be familiarized with the synergies arising from use in combination with both methods, through learning by doing. In this way they’ll gain skills in Value Stream Mapping and using MTM. “Value Stream Mapping” largely has established itself for examining the entire process chain. To quantify the examined current and target states and conduct a dependable comparison of alternatives, MTM offers building block systems suitable for any situation. With this seminar MTM makes it clear that it hasn’t forgotten its roots in the classic labor economy and time management, but offers thorough expertise in process design and optimization together with other suitable methods and processes in industrial engineering.
Knuth Jasker: Naturally we also see this trend toward an intelligent combination and use of processes and methods in consultancy. MTM is seen here as a process language and core element for Value Stream Mapping. We aren’t just offering companies MTM data calculations, but rather the complete design and quantification of Value Stream and subsystems. We lead the way in CIP processes for identifying potential and accurate quantification. We guide companies through the implementation phase until they’ve reached their goals regarding cycle time and productivity. To illustrate I’ll use the example of “rapid setup,” which currently is quite common in examining Value Stream for reducing carrying costs and cycle times. Through numerous consultation projects we’ve determined that MTM and Value Stream form an ideal combination of methods. Our core expertise is using Value Stream in other successful IE tools together with MTM. Along with that comes our support during implementation. The MTM Organization is thus in a position to offer training, consulting and software from a single source.
